Joan Tower (natural 1938) is a contemporary U.s. composer. She became known for her 1st orchestral composition, Redwood, the tone poem which structurally depicts a elephantine redwood from either trunk to needles. Among her more large pieces come a Fanfares for the Rare Woman, which are then something of the response to Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, her two string quartets, and an assortment of more symphonic poem.

Tower's style is of the 20th century, and a 21st. A rhythm & melodic flow of her music may be flexible, non limited by tonality or time signature, and her orchestration encompasses the wide range of tone colors. She teaches that a better pieces come a ones that are non "safe" around terms of sitting in the key or even even meter or standard class action of instruments.
